In interior design, an appliqué usually refers to a decorative element that is applied (fixed onto) a surface to enhance its look.

Main Uses in Interiors:

  1. Wall & Furniture Decoration

    • Ornamental motifs or patterns made of plaster, wood, or metal that are attached to walls, ceilings, doors, or furniture.

    • Example: carved wood appliqués on cabinets or plaster appliqués on ceilings.

  2. Lighting Fixtures (Wall Appliqué / Sconce)

    • In French and in design vocabulary, appliqué mural means wall sconce—a light fixture attached directly to the wall.

    • Common in hallways, bedrooms, and as accent lighting.
