What is Windows Modules Installer Worker?
Yoindows Modules Installer Worker (also known as TiWorker.exe) is a legitimate Windows process responsible for installing, updating, and removing system components like updates, drivers, and optional features (e.g., .NET Framework). It runs in the background during Windows Update tasks, which can temporarily spike CPU usage up to 50-100%. This is normal during active updates but can become problematic if it persists for hours or occurs frequently without updates pending, often due to corrupted update files, stalled processes, or conflicts.
It's not malware, but high usage can slow your PC, cause overheating, or disrupt tasks. On Windows 10/11 (common as of 2025), this issue affects both desktops and laptops.
Why Does It Cause High CPU Usage?
Common triggers include:
- Pending or stalled updates: The process scans for, downloads, or installs updates, backing up old files in the process.
- Corrupted Windows Update components: Damaged files in the SoftwareDistribution folder or update cache.
- Outdated drivers or low RAM: Forces the process to work harder during scans.
- Third-party software conflicts: Antivirus or other apps interfering with updates.
- Multiple queued updates: Especially after major feature updates (e.g., Windows 11 24H2).
- Background maintenance: Post-update cleanup or optimization tasks.
If it's using 70%+ CPU during "working hours" (when updates are typically paused), it may indicate a bug or misconfiguration.
