For a generator set running even a few thousand hours a year, that exhaust is a free, steady heat source that is usually just thrown away up the stack. An air-to-air recovery core in the exhaust stream can reclaim a useful fraction of that energy as warm make-up or combustion air, trimming the building’s heating load or pre-heating the engine’s own intake. This article covers how much energy is available, why material choice dominates the design, and how air-to-air recovery fits alongside water-loop combined heat and power.

The energy available

A reciprocating or turbine engine exhaust carries a substantial portion of the fuel’s lower heating value, commonly 25 to 35 percent, as sensible enthalpy in the hot gases. Recovering even part of that as warm air is valuable because it arrives at a temperature high enough to preheat ventilation or process make-up air directly, with no secondary fluid loop. A vision industrial de recuperacion mas amplia puts this in context with other process streams, but the engine exhaust is special because it is hot, continuous and predictable. The recovered energy shows up as reduced gas or electric heating elsewhere on site, and the simple payback tracks the engine’s run hours: the more it runs, the faster the core pays for itself.

Core material

Material

Techo de temperatura

Resistencia a la corrosion

Caso de uso

Aluminio

~250-300 C

Baja en el escape

Solo corrientes de aire diluidas y frias

Acero inoxidable 304

~600 C

Buena

Escape de motor general

Acero inoxidable 316

~700 C

Mejor (molibdeno)

Azufre, marino, servicio duro

Dúplex / especial

~800 °C o más

Alto

Servicio severo, continuo

CHP context

Specify engine recovery with QIYU
