Hot aisle air is passed through a plate or rotary air-to-air heat exchanger to warm incoming fresh air or nearby spaces. For sensible recovery in data-center environments, plate exchangers and indirect evaporative (IEC) units are the common choice. Rotary wheels are generally avoided here because of cross-contamination and leakage risk between supply and exhaust streams.<\/p>\n<p>The second path is water-based. Server heat is moved into a water loop and delivered to district heating networks or nearby buildings. This works best in dense, cold-climate cities where there is steady demand for heat.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the Timing Is Right<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Energy costs: every recovered kilowatt-hour is one less bought from the grid.<\/li>\n<li>ESG targets: reusing heat turns a waste stream into a reported sustainability win.<\/li>\n<li>Regulation: some regions now require large facilities to recover or report wasted heat.<\/li>\n<li>District heating: utility partnerships make reuse practical at city scale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What to Specify<\/h2>\n<p>For air-side recovery, choose plate exchangers or IEC for sensible heat and keep supply and exhaust streams separated. For water-side recovery, size the loop for part-load rather than peak, and protect it with proper filtration. Whatever the path, pair the exchanger with metering so the recovered energy can be measured and reported.<\/p>\n<h2>Outlook<\/h2>\n<p>Expect recovery to move from pilot projects to default design in new data-center builds.
