Jet fans push air along the tunnel, supply and exhaust fans replace it, and in a cold-climate region the incoming air is heated before it enters so it does not freeze the portal or the structure. That heating load is continuous through winter and it is paid for by the same energy the exhaust carries out. An air-to-air recovery core in the exhaust path can preheat the intake air, clawing back a meaningful fraction of the heating cost, but tunnels also impose unique constraints, dust, pressure budget, fire mode and access, that decide whether recovery is worth it. This article covers the scale, the plate-core approach, and the challenges that make tunnel recovery a specialist job.

The scale problem

First, dust and grit foul the core quickly, so the design needs wash-down access and a maintenance plan tied to the ventilation outages, which in a live tunnel are rare and expensive. Second, the pressure budget is tight; the core’s added drop must be small enough that the existing fans still meet the emergency ventilation rates, and that often means a lower face velocity and a bigger core than the thermal calculation alone would suggest. Third, fire and smoke mode is paramount: in an incident the recovery unit must get out of the way, a fire/smoke bypass routes the exhaust around the core so it never restricts the emergency airflow. Get any of these wrong and the recovery unit becomes a liability rather than a saving, so tunnel recovery is genuinely a specialist application that should be engineered, not bolted on.

Engineer tunnel recovery with QIYU
