Ventilation and process exhaust recovery therefore qualify on both axes of the SEU definition: substantial consumption et large improvement potential. Once designated, the SEU must have documented operating criteria, calibrated metering, and competent operators.

From Standard to Savings

Define the EnPI before installing recovery: e.g. exhaust heat reclaimed (kW) normalized by outdoor temperature and occupancy.

Apply the method from our industrial waste heat recovery case to a building exhaust stream.

Tie recovery to a Pompe à chaleur or high-temperature heat pump to lift low-grade recoverable heat to useful temperature — then track the combined EnPI.

Auditability

The standard requires demonstrated improvement, not just a system on paper. Meter the recovery loop, normalize for weather and activity, and retain records so the claim survives audit. That discipline is exactly what turns a one-off retrofit into a measured, repeatable saving.

Questions fréquemment posées

Does ISO 50001 prescribe heat recovery technology?
No. It specifies an Energy Management System structure, but recovery naturally becomes a significant energy use to control and measure.

What is the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle in ISO 50001?
Energy review, energy baseline, energy performance indicators, and monitoring with management review.

Why is HVAC often a significant energy use?
It commonly represents a large share of total building energy, and ventilation or process exhaust recovery offers large improvement potential.

How is recovery savings made auditable?
Meter the recovery loop, normalize for weather and activity, and retain records so the improvement claim survives audit.

Articles connexes

Récupération de chaleur pour le séchage industriel et l'agriculture

ISO 50001:2018, confirmed in 2024 and updated by Amendment 1:2024 (climate-action wording), is the international standard for an Energy Management System (EnMS).
