Plate Heat Exchangers: Types, Applications and Maintenance

A plate heat exchanger transfers heat between two fluids through a stack of thin, corrugated metal plates. The plates create a large surface area in a compact footprint, so the unit achieves very high heat-transfer efficiency while staying small and easy to service.

Hot and cold fluids flow in alternate channels formed by the plates. The corrugated pattern turbulates the flow, boosting transfer, while gaskets or welds keep the streams separate so they never mix. Heat passes through the thin plate walls from the hot side to the cold side.

  • Gasketed plate – plates held by gaskets; easy to open, clean and reconfigure. Ideal for duties that need frequent maintenance.
  • Brazed plate – copper-brazed, fully sealed and compact; suited to refrigeration and high-pressure liquid duties.
  • Welded plate – plates welded for aggressive or high-pressure fluids where gaskets cannot be used.
  • Semi-welded – one circuit welded, one gasketed; common in ammonia refrigeration.

Advantages: high efficiency, small size, easy capacity changes (add or remove plates), good for tight spaces.

Limitations: gaskets limit temperature and pressure; not ideal for very dirty or fibrous fluids without proper filtration.

Plate units are straightforward to maintain:

  • Clean-in-place (CIP) with circulation of a descaling or alkaline solution.
  • Inspect and replace gaskets on a schedule aligned with duty severity.
  • Monitor pressure drop – a rising drop signals fouling.
  • Torque the frame bolts to the manufacturer’s spec after reassembly.

  1. Define fluids, temperatures, pressures and flow rates.
  2. Check fouling potential and choose gasket or welded type accordingly.
  3. Size for the required duty with a fouling margin.
  4. Confirm cleanability and spare-plate availability.

How often should plates be cleaned? It depends on fouling; monitor pressure drop and clean when it rises 10–15% above baseline.

Can I add capacity later? Yes – gasketed units let you add plates to the frame as duty grows.
