Energy Recovery Wheel Troubleshooting: Common Faults and Fixes

Table of Contents

Cause: wheel not rotating (motor or belt failure), or condensate/fouling blocking the matrix.
Fix: verify rotation and speed; wash the wheel with low-pressure water and a mild detergent; confirm belt tension.

Cause: exhaust-side temperature dropping below freezing.
Fix: enable purge sector, reduce speed, or add preheat. See frost protection methods.

Cause: worn seals or misaligned purge.
Fix: replace seal strips; check purge-sector geometry; confirm supply/exhaust pressure balance.

Cause: bent wheel, bearing wear, or debris.
Fix: rebalance or replace the wheel; service bearings.

Cause: excessive carryover in a space with odor sources.
Fix: increase purge, or switch to a plate exchanger where separation is absolute.

A semi-annual inspection - rotation check, seal inspection, and a clean if pressure drop has risen >15% - prevents most failures. Track effectiveness and pressure drop at each service to catch drift early.
