Laboratory Heat Recovery: Capturing Fume Hood Exhaust Energy

Laboratories are energy hogs - fume hoods run at high face velocities and dump conditioned air outdoors continuously. A lab can use 5-10x the energy per square meter of a typical office. Recovering that exhaust energy is one of the fastest paybacks available.

Fume hood exhaust may carry chemical vapors, so supply and exhaust must never mix. That makes fixed-plate air-to-air heat exchangers the safe default - streams are physically isolated.

Most lab exhaust is warm and dry (sensible-dominated), so sensible plate recovery already captures the bulk of the available energy. In humid climates, an enthalpic core helps, but only with a chemical-compatible membrane.

Install the exchanger in the central exhaust riser or at the AHU. For hoods scattered across floors, a run-around coil loop can gather energy from multiple risers into one supply stream.

  • Keep pressure drop low - hood face velocity is safety-critical, not a comfort setting.
  • Size to winter design; summer cooling recovery is a bonus.
  • Coordinate with cleanroom-style separation rules where labs share stringent air-quality needs.

Well-designed lab recovery typically cuts HVAC energy 30-50%, directly lowering both operating cost and carbon footprint.
