The 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) addresses commercial ventilation largely by reference to ASHRAE 62.1-2022. Because 62.1 already requires energy recovery on many large outdoor-air systems, IECC 2024 indirectly tightens ERV expectations, in Climate Zones 4 to 8 an energy recovery ventilator is commonly required where a system supplies more than about 1,000 CFM of outdoor air and the outdoor-air fraction exceeds roughly 30%.

On the residential side, IECC 2024 expands the HRV/ERV mandate into Climate Zone 6, it was limited to CZ 7 and 8 in the 2021 edition. Balanced heat or energy recovery ventilation is now required in CZ 6, 7, and 8, with a minimum sensible effectiveness of 65% at rated continuous airflow in the coldest zones.

  • Demand-control ventilation (DCV) is expanded, spaces over 500 sq ft designed for more than 25 people often require CO2-based DCV.
  • Enhanced commissioning is mandated for ventilation systems, especially those with DCV and ERV, verifying airflow, sensor calibration, and control sequences.
  • Duct-leakage testing is reinforced for systems above 5,000 CFM.

These provisions align US code with ASHRAE 90.1 and the EU EPBD zero-emission-building trajectory, making energy recovery a default rather than an option.
