A commercial laundry is a relentless consumer of energy: washers fill with hot water that goes down the drain, and dryers exhaust hot, moist, lint-laden air that must be replaced by conditioned make-up air. In a 24/7 operation like a hotel, hospital or uniform service, that load dominates the utility bill, which makes laundry one of the highest-payback recovery applications there is. Two streams carry almost all the wasted energy. The dryer exhaust is hot, often 60 to 80 degrees C, saturated with moisture, and full of lint and detergent residue, a harsh airstream that defeats delicate recovery devices. The wash water leaves at 40 to 60 degrees C down the drain, taking the heating energy with it. Together they represent a large, continuous thermal loss that, recovered, could preheat incoming water or make-up air and cut both the gas and electricity bill. The cleanest win is on the dryer exhaust. The challenge is fouling: detergents, lint and hardness build up on the drain side, so the exchanger needs a cleanable plate pack, good water treatment, and often a strainer upstream. Many installations use a tempering tank or a heat exchanger sized for periodic descaling.
