- ISO 50001 follows Plan-Do-Check-Act: Energy review — map energy sources, uses, and consumption; identify significant energy uses (SEUs). Energy baseline (EnB) — reference against which improvement is measured. Energy performance indicators (EnPIs) — e.g. heat recovered per m³ of exhaust, or kWh saved per unit produced. Monitoring & management review — verify the recovery device performs as modeled.
- In commercial and institutional buildings, HVAC is often the dominant SEU at 40–60% of total energy. Ventilation and process exhaust recovery therefore qualify on both axes of the SEU definition: substantial consumption and large improvement potential. Once designated, the SEU must have documented operating criteria, calibrated metering, and competent operators.
- Define the EnPI before installing recovery: e.g. exhaust heat reclaimed (kW) normalized by outdoor temperature and occupancy. ISO 50001:2018, confirmed in 2024 and updated by Amendment 1:2024 (climate-action wording), is the international standard for an Energy Management System (EnMS). It does not prescribe technologies, but its structure makes heat recovery a natural “significant energy use” to control and measure.
