Swimming Pool Dehumidification and Heat Recovery: Cracking the Condensation Problem

目次

natatorium is one of the toughest HVAC environments in any building: warm water evaporates continuously, loading the air with vapour that condenses on every cold surface and rots the structure if ignored. Ventilation must remove moisture, not just heat, and the make-up air it pulls in is expensive to condition. The right air-to-air recovery strategy reclaims both the sensible and latent energy from the exhaust and pre-heats the incoming air. This article covers why pools are an energy nightmare, the recovery architecture, material choices and sizing.

Open water surface evaporation is relentless; a 25 m pool can evaporate hundreds of litres a day, and that vapour carries large amounts of latent heat. The building must be ventilated hard enough to keep indoor humidity below about 60% RH so condensation does not attack windows, steel and fittings. But exhausting that moist air throws away both its heat and its moisture energy, and the make-up air must be heated (and in winter, often dehumidified indirectly) before it enters. 空中回収 intercepts the exhaust and recovers a large share of that lost energy.

The standard approach places a plate or wrap-around coil ahead of a heat-pump dehumidifier. The recovery device pre-warms the make-up air with the exhaust and, in an enthalpy design, also transfers moisture, reducing the dehumidifier's load. A wrap-around (run-around) coil loop is attractive in pools because the supply and exhaust are fully isolated — useful where the exhaust is chlorine-laden and you do not want any path back to supply. Pair the recovery with a dedicated pool dehumidifier so the system controls humidity first and recovers energy second.

Chlorine and the associated chemicals are corrosive, so material selection decides service life. Bare steel in the airstream is a mistake; PVC, titanium, or coated aluminium cores resist the environment far better. The core should be drainable so condensate does not sit and breed biofilm, and the exchanger should be accessible for periodic wash-down. Our 選択ガイド compares aluminium, stainless and PVC options against airstream chemistry.

Size the exhaust and make-up paths to the evaporation rate of the pool at its design temperature and bather load, then size the recovery core for the resulting flow and the winter temperature difference. Target 60–70% sensible effectiveness on the plate, with the dehumidifier handling the remaining latent load. Remember the dual prize: occupant comfort and structure protection. Under-sized recovery leaves condensation unchecked; over-sized recovery adds pressure drop and fan cost. A balanced design typically pays back in two to four years through reduced pool-heater and make-up-air conditioning load.
