“We are certified” is the most repeated — and most abused — phrase in Chinese HVAC exports. Here is how to verify it before you pay.
CE marking
A bare CE sticker is often a self-declaration (Module A) and proves little. For pressurised plate exchangers, ask whether the supplier complies with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU) via a notified body. A real PED certificate names the notified body and the module.
AHRI
For air-to-air and plate recovery, check the AHRI directory (directory.ahrinet.org). Many Chinese makers now certify models to AHRI 1060 (air-to-air energy recovery) and AHRI 410. If the model is not in the directory, the claim is unverified.
Eurovent
eurovent-certification.com lists certified units with independently verified performance. A Eurovent cert is the strongest single signal of tested effectiveness for European buyers.
ISO and ASME
ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 are baseline. For pressure vessels, ASME “U”/“S” stamps matter. Always ask for the current certificate, not a photo from 2019.
The document package that actually matters
- EN 308 or AHRI 1060 test report with the exact model and face velocity.
- Witnessed hydrostatic test at 1.5× design pressure.
- Material mill certificates to EN 10204 3.1 with heat numbers matching the build log.
Red flags
No test report; refuses a factory audit; generic certificate PDF with no model detail; pressure-equipment “CE” with no notified body. Walk away or insist on third-party inspection (e.g., Bureau Veritas).
