Sélection du échangeur à caloduc : quand la récupération passive l'emporte

What a heat pipe is

A heat pipe is a sealed tube with a working fluid that transfers heat by evaporation and condensation – no moving parts, no power, no cross-flow. In HVAC, banks of heat pipes sit in the airstream to pre-cool (or pre-heat) incoming air using the exhaust stream. It is the most passive form of air-to-air recovery.

When heat pipes win

  • Zero cross-contamination – supply and exhaust never mix, ideal for cleanrooms et hospitals.
  • No frost, no defrost – the thermal diode effect and gravity-assisted designs avoid the icing problems of wheels (see protection anti-gel).
  • Maintenance-free – no motor, belt, or seals to service.

Selection criteria

  • Orientation – gravity-assisted pipes need a slight tilt; capillary (arterial) pipes work in any position.
  • efficacité – typically 0.50-0.70, lower than a rotary wheel but with none of its carryover.
  • Plage de température – pick the working fluid (water, ammonia, refrigerants) for the operating band.

Heat pipe vs other devices

Compare with plate, rotary, and run-around coils in our plate vs rotary vs heat pipe guide. Heat pipes suit moderate airflows where reliability and separation beat peak effectiveness. Size using the method in efficiency metrics.

Where heat pipes fit best

Because they have no moving parts and no cross-flow, heat pipes suit applications where reliability and absolute stream separation outweigh peak effectiveness: cleanrooms, hospitals, and electronic or sensitive-equipment rooms are natural fits. They also work well as a passive pre-cool or pre-heat stage ahead of a cooling or heating coil, trimming the load before the active system sees it.

Understanding the limits

The typical 0.50 to 0.70 effectiveness is lower than a rotary wheel, so heat pipes are not the choice where maximum energy recovery is the only priority. They also need the evaporator and condenser sections correctly oriented for the working fluid, and their capacity is fixed at manufacture, unlike a wheel, so you cannot simply speed them up for more recovery. Specifying the right fluid and tilt is therefore part of the design, not an afterthought.

Installation and verification

Heat pipes install as a passive bank in the airstream with no wiring or controls, which simplifies commissioning. Verify performance by measuring the temperature change across each section and comparing it to the supplier rated effectiveness at the operating airflow. Because there is little to fail, ongoing checks are infrequent, a useful advantage where maintenance access is poor.

Questions fréquemment posées

What is a heat pipe exchanger?
Sealed tubes with a working fluid transfer heat by evaporation and condensation. They have no moving parts, no power, and no cross-flow, making them a passive form of air-to-air recovery.

When do heat pipes win?
When zero cross-contamination, no frost or defrost, and maintenance-free operation matter, such as in cleanrooms, hospitals, and moderate airflows.

What are their limits?
Effectiveness is typically 0.50 to 0.70, lower than a rotary wheel, and capacity is fixed at manufacture. They need the correct orientation and working fluid.

How do I select one?
Consider orientation, effectiveness, and the working-fluid temperature range, then compare with plate, rotary, and run-around coils.
