Hot, greasy air is a fire pathway, so the recovery device must sit inside the building’s fire strategy, not outside it. In many jurisdictions the exhaust duct and any energy-recovery unit in it must be within reach of the automatic sprinkler or fire-suppression system, and the unit must not obstruct the fire damper or the make-up air smoke path.
